ER, PR, HER2 and Ki-67
ER and PR are hormone receptors. HER2 is another protein assessed in breast cancer. These results help the treating team plan care. Ki-67 describes cell proliferation and is used in selected contexts; it is not a diagnosis on its own.
These tests use tissue
Biomarker testing is commonly performed on tissue from a biopsy or operation. It is different from screening mammography and from inherited genetic testing such as a BRCA test. The laboratory needs suitable material and the clinical request.
